 #1789 coupler

Remove buffers (bumpers) from the ends with a 7/32" wrench. Be careful to loosen nuts before turning buffers to avoid scratching the paint. Remove the original coupler by carefully removing the screw and nut.

Remove the underframe ( 6 screws) from the car body.

Make a mounting platform ( plate or shim) .330" (21/64") thick x 1.5" ( 1 1/2") wide and .890" (57/64") long from plastic or any suitable material. A combination of thicknesses can be glued together then cut , sanded or filed to size.

Use a #43 .089" drill to drill the holes according to the pattern and measurements illustrated and then tap the holes for #4-40 screws.

Mount the platform to the underframe and secure from the inside of the underframe with #4-40 x 3/8" screws.

Assemble the coupler according to the instructions.

Mount the coupler to the platform with 2 #4-40 screws of appropriate length, shorten screws if necessary.

You will need to fill the buffer screw holes with short screws and nuts. The buffers will not be used.

Check for correct coupler height, function, and clearance and make any adjustments necessary.
