Code 110 and Code 88 Wheels
The terms Code 110 and Code 88 relate to the width of HO Scale wheels. Code 110 wheels are 0.110" wide whereas Code 88 wheels are 0.088" wide. Code 110 wheels are common standard-width wheels and are found on most models. Code 88 wheels (also referred to as "Semi-Scale" wheels) are used when modelers want a more prototypical looking wheel width.
An actual HO Scale prototypical wheel width would be around 0.067" wide. Although a 0.067” wide wheel would run OK on the average track, they will not function properly in common turnouts and crossings. Code 88 wheels are the minimum width that will run on most common tracks if gauged correctly.
There are very few operational differences between Code 110 and Code 88 wheels. Code 88 wheels look great on open frame cars like hoppers and tank cars. However, they still look great on boxcars, gondolas, and reefers – they’re just not as noticeable.
