I am so happy to see more new modelers calling and asking questions. My goal is to get the new modelers pointed in the right direction. Understanding knuckle couplers and how to convert their cars to Kadee® couplers, so they don’t get so frustrated that they lose interest in the model railroad hobby. Unfortunately, it seems many new modelers use the internet & AI models, and they get misinformation when starting out. They are at their wits’ end before finally contacting us for help. It can be quite overwhelming for a new modeler to get the correct information to solve the problem after being bombarded with incorrect information. Most people don’t realize that everything on their layout affects something else, and something that one would think is unrelated may be the cause of the problem. Bad trackage is the #1 thing people overlook. A layout may run short cars just fine, but now mix in modern long cars, and there may be all kinds of problems. Large-scale modelers (#1, A, G, F, and related gauges) often face coupler incompatibility when mixing equipment from manufacturers like LGB, Aristo-Craft, USA Trains, Bachmann, and others. Factory-installed hook-and-loop or varying knuckle designs lead to coupling incompatibility. Kadee® large-scale knuckle couplers solve this by providing an aftermarket knuckle coupler that is compatible across brands of equipment (when properly installed), while offering realistic appearance and smooth performance.

Kadee® offers two primary sizes for large scale:

G-Scale couplers: Larger profile suited to 1:22.5, 1:20.3, 1:29 models. These provide better coupling reliability on tight curves. Newer #900/906 (body mount) and #909 (truck mount) AAR Type “E” styles feature a more prototypical look with hidden knuckle springs. Original Style #830/831 have exposed knuckle springs. I have been getting so many questions about other couplers; I am thinking this needs to be addressed. Many people just assume that just because we make couplers, we made all the OEM couplers ever produced. Not true, we only make Kadee® Magne-Matic® Knuckle Couplers. We have not made, and do not make, hook & loop, horn hook (X2f), or any other proprietary coupler that you may have on old locomotives or rolling stock, whether it is HO, O, or Large Scale. If you are looking for old non-Kadee couplers, contact the manufacturer of the loco or car. If the manufacturer no longer exists, you are limited to the used parts market if you insist on keeping the original couplers; otherwise, you will need to upgrade to Kadee® Magne-Matic® knuckle couplers.

Also please don’t confuse the Chinese knockoff knuckle couplers with Kadee® Magne-Matic® knuckle couplers. There are many ways to tell if your equipment has a Chinese knockoff knuckle coupler. If you are having uncoupling problems, you have Chinese
